INDIANAPOLIS – Elizabeth Guthrie's breakout summer continued Wednesday at Meridian Hills Country Club.
Fresh off her first AJGA victory at the AJGA Junior Championship presented by Visit Tallahassee last week, Guthrie added another accomplishment to her resume, firing a 5-under 67 in the final round of stroke-play qualifying to claim medalist honors at the 99th Women's Western Junior Championship.
The Charlotte, North Carolina, native finished 7-under par over 36 holes. She settled in after offsetting her birdie on No. 2 with a bogey on No. 3, carding five birdies and 10 pars over her final 15 holes to claim the No. 1 seed for match play.
"I played some great, steady golf," Guthrie said. "I had a ton of close wedges that really helped and played pretty clean golf."
Guthrie's 67 came after an opening-round 70. Knowing her length off the tee could be an advantage, she remained aggressive throughout the round.
"The course is pretty straight in front of you," she said. "I hit it pretty far off the tee, which is a strength of mine. The greens were nice and soft today."
Guthrie quickly turned her focus to match play.
"I'm going to enjoy today and the match play celebration," she said. "I'm not going to try and do anything different tomorrow. It feels great to make the cut and do so well at such a prestigious event. Everyone here is really great. It's my first time playing this event, and it's been great."
After opening the championship with a 6-under-par 66, Alexandra Snyder, of Orlando, Florida, carded an even-par 72 to finish alone in second at 6-under par.
A three-way tie for third at 5-under included Maria Isabella Errichetto of Colombia; Amy Weng of San Juan Capistrano, California; and Iris Lee of Orlando, Florida. All three players finished under par in both rounds of stroke play.
Alexa Takai of Honolulu, Hawaii, also posted two under-par rounds to finish sixth at 4-under par.
The low round of the day belonged to Alyssa Zhang of Allison Park, Pennsylvania, who fired a bogey-free 66 that featured an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole and four birdies. After opening with a 75, Zhang matched Snyder’s first-round score, which is believed to be the lowest stroke-play round in Women’s Western Junior history.
In doing so, Zhang surged into a tie for seventh at 3-under par with Reese Wallace, of South Barrington, Illinois, and Grace Carter, of Jupiter, Florida.
The race for the final match-play spots came down to the closing holes. Kara An, runner-up at the 2025 Women's Western Junior, secured her place in the Sweet 16 with a par on the 18th hole, finishing tied for 12th at 1-under. The cut came at even par.
With qualifying complete, the championship now shifts to match play, where 16 players remain in pursuit of the Icely Cup.
Match play begins Thursday with the round of 16 and quarterfinals. The semifinals will be played Friday morning, followed by the championship match on Friday afternoon.
